What Is a Psychotherapy-Informed Coach and How Is It Different From Therapy?
If you have been searching for support after divorce or separation, you have probably come across a range of options — therapists, counsellors, life coaches, mindset coaches and wondered what the difference actually is, and which one is right for where you are.
This post will explain what a psychotherapy-informed coach is, how this approach differs from therapy, and why it might be exactly what you need at this stage of your journey.
What is a psychotherapy-informed coach?
A psychotherapy-informed coach is someone who holds formal training and qualifications in psychotherapy and draws on that psychological depth within a coaching framework. This is different from a standard life coach, who may not have clinical training, and different from a therapist, who works within a clinical and often diagnostic framework.
In practical terms, it means the work we do together is grounded in an understanding of how the mind, body, and nervous system respond to trauma, grief, and major life transitions while remaining focused on your present life and your future direction, rather than extended exploration of the past.
How is coaching different from therapy?
Therapy — particularly long-term psychotherapy is designed to explore and process deep psychological material, often rooted in past experiences. It is the right choice when someone is working through significant trauma, mental health conditions, or needs a clinical diagnosis and treatment.
Coaching is forward-focused. It works with where you are now and where you want to go. It is structured, goal-oriented, and designed to create momentum.
Psychotherapy-informed coaching sits at the intersection of both. It brings the psychological understanding and relational depth of therapy into a coaching container oriented toward rebuilding, clarity, and intentional forward movement.
Why does this distinction matter for women going through divorce?
Divorce is not simply an emotional event — it is an identity event. The woman who exists on the other side of a marriage is, in many ways, someone new. She is not broken. She is in the process of becoming.
Standard life coaching can sometimes move too quickly toward goal-setting before the emotional ground has been prepared. Standard therapy can sometimes be slow to move toward the practical rebuilding that a woman at this stage desperately needs.
Psychotherapy-informed coaching holds both. It creates space to process the grief, the loss of identity, and the emotional complexity of this transition while also helping you to regulate, reorient, and begin consciously designing what comes next.
What does this look like in practice?
In my work with women through The Next Chapter, every session is shaped by what you bring. Some sessions will feel more like a deep conversation, exploring what you are carrying, naming what has shifted, and making sense of the emotional terrain. Others will be more structured — clarifying your values, identifying what you want your life to look like, building the practical scaffolding of your next chapter.
What stays consistent throughout is the psychological safety of the container. You are not just a client with goals. You are a whole woman in the middle of a significant life transition, and the work honours that entirely.
Is this the right support for you?
Psychotherapy-informed coaching is likely the right fit if you are emotionally ready to begin moving forward, but need more than a standard life coach can offer. If you are in acute crisis, experiencing severe depression or anxiety, or require clinical mental health support, therapy or your GP should be your first port of call. I am always honest about this in an initial consultation.
If you are functioning, grieving, and quietly wondering who you are on the other side of this, and you are ready to find out, this work was made for you.
The Next Chapter is a six-month, 1:1 psychotherapy-informed coaching programme for women rebuilding after divorce and separation.
